Pain Points

Sometimes things hurt, and we have to take a break so that we don’t make it worse.

Sometimes things hurt, and we have to keep pushing through the discomfort for a greater purpose.

The tricky thing is knowing the difference.

My daughter recently hurt her finger pretty bad and kept pushing, exacerbating the injury. It has now made her (selectively) cautious, when she used to be fearless. We talked about what happened to see if we could find some clues to help us know when to rest and when to push.

  1. Listen to your body. If we are distracted, we might be numb to the pain we feel, whether that pain is physical, mental, emotional, etc. remaining connected to your body can help you recognize when something isn’t right.

  2. Get clear on your goals, both short term long term. If your goal is immediate, can you safely push through to do what you want or need to do? If your goal is a long game, would conserving your strength and protecting yourself set you up for success down the road? Do you need to re-evaluate or re-prioritze your goals based on the situation?

  3. Surround yourself with awesome coaches. A good coach can offer a different perspective, provide tips, and keep you motivated and focused on your goals. A good coach cares about your success and well-being. This role is not limited to literal coaches, but could be extended to anyone who has this positive influence for you.

There is a time to rest and a time to dig deep and hustle; both serve a valuable purpose when aligned with our goals and purpose.
